Studio 180 Theatre invites submissions for 2018/19 RBC Emerging Director position
Studio 180 Theatre is accepting applications for the paid position of 2018/19 RBC Emerging Director. This position, made possible by the RBC Emerging Artists Project, offers hands-on training under the mentorship of Studio 180 Co-Founder and Artistic Director Joel Greenberg and Co-Founder and Core Artistic Team member Mark McGrinder.

The Emerging Director will be engaged for a total of nine weeks between November 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019 and will receive a fee of $3,825, paid in instalments throughout the season. The Emerging Director will act as an Assistant Director to Joel Greenberg on Oslo by J.T. Rogers, a Studio 180 Theatre production presented by David Mirvish at the CAA Theatre (February-March 2019). The rehearsal period is January 8 – February 13, 2019 in Toronto. Applicants must be available during this timeframe and will also be expected to attend meetings in the pre-production period. Applicants are encouraged to read the script, which can be found at the Toronto Reference Library, or purchased online in paperback and Kindle formats.
The Emerging Director’s work will be showcased in a public reading in Spring 2019 when they will direct a reading of an established play as part of our Studio 180 READS series. The Emerging Director will also have the opportunity to audit new play development workshops under the leadership of Mark McGrinder during the November 2018 and April 2019 instalments of Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT.
“Being linked and presented by Studio 180 as director to the theatre community has changed my profile. I’ve noticed the interest. And I feel that gives me the opening to approach other companies in that role as I look for the next step.”
— Sarah Orenstein, 2017/18 RBC Emerging Director
We are seeking early-career directors who are passionate about socio-politically driven work. Mid-career and established theatre artists transitioning to directing from another role are also welcome to apply. The ideal candidate aspires to make directing a primary part of their artistic career.
Studio 180 Theatre is committed to equitable representation in our company and to fostering an inclusive Canadian theatre community. To this end, we encourage applications from women, non-binary, LGBTQ, Indigenous, and POC directors.
Please submit a one-page letter of interest, along with your resume, using this Google form: goo.gl/forms/uxT67YilYvlYSfZi2. The form also gives you an option to upload additional support materials, should you feel that this would help familiarize us with your work.
Submission deadline: Monday, October 1, 2018 at 11:59PM
We thank all applicants. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Please direct any questions to Mark McGrinder at firstname.lastname@example.org.
