Vesta Lunch was the most popular image in architectural photographer David Kaufman’s 2013 exhibition, Early Sunday Morning. The exhibition was named one of the best shows of that year’s Contact Photography Festival by Toronto Life, NOW Magazine, and Xtra!. The exhibition title came from Edward Hopper’s famous 1930 painting of the same name. The American painter’s work embodies many of the aesthetic features that distinguish Kaufman’s detailed photographic renderings of century-old brick buildings along Queen Street and in other heritage districts of Toronto.

It was made by applying all-from-nature Chinese paints on special drawing silk using Chinese brush, the same technique that has lasted for more than 1000 years. The subject of this fan is plum blossom and plum branches which, according to Chinese literature tradition, are metaphors of honesty and resilience. This fan embodies delicate brushstrokes, clear colours, and spare composition which are the unique aesthetic features of Chinese traditional drawing.
